Mengniu bows to Yili for damages made by its employee

DAIRY producer Mengniu issued an official statement apologizing for its employee's slanderous remarks about its competitor and vowed to strengthen management.

"We deeply regret about the bad influence caused by An Yong, a former employee of Mengniu, to Yili Group and our consumers," said the statement issued this morning, the Beijing Times reported.

As a product manager in the liquid milk department, An initiated the smearing attack on his own and didn't report to the company, according to the statement.

Without asking permission from his supervisor, An worked with partner PR agency and spread accusations online that the fish oil in Yili's baby formula was harmful to babies' health. An should take responsibility for the consequences, the statement said.

An was arrested in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and was dismissed by Mengniu. The dairy company pledged to learn from the lesson and strengthen internal management to prevent such things from happening again.

An and several workers of BossePR allegedly posted a made-up story online in July to defame Yili Group, claiming its baby formula was causing premature puberty in infants. They missed the intended target and instead affected the formula producer Synutra International.

An used to be an employee of Yili and came to Mengniu in 2005. Both Mengniu and Yili are Hohhot-based dairy makers.
