Mengniu milk sickens 251 pupils

A TOTAL of 251 students fell ill after drinking milk at a school in Shaanxi Province yesterday morning, local authorities said.

Students had symptoms including fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea after drinking the milk provided to Yuhe Town Central Primary School in Yuyang District, Yulin City, a spokesman for the district government said.

Seventy students were hospitalized for observation and 44 remained in the outpatient department for observation as of 6pm, a school representative said.

The school's milk inventory has been sealed off.

The milk's producer has arrived to assist in the investigation.

The milk was purchased by the district's education bureau and then distributed to the students each morning, the representative said.

The milk was produced by Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd, which was embroiled in the country's worst food safety scandal in recent years.

In that scandal, infant formula and other dairy products were tainted with the industrial chemical melamine, which can cause kidney stones and kidney failure.

The tainted dairy products killed six children and sickened more than 300,000 others in 2008.
