'Menstruating' hen blamed for bloody egg white

AN egg company claimed that its "hens were menstruating" after a consumer in Qingdao, Shandong Province complained that the egg white of its products appear to be blood-red.

The local Peninsula Metropolitan Daily said the consumer surnamed Bai found one of the eggs she bought from a supermarket had egg white in the shade of blood.

Supermarket officials told the newspaper that it was normal for the egg white to appear red because the eggs were produced by special hens fed with insects. That's why the company's eggs were labeled "Insect Eggs."

Bai was even more shocked when an official with Rensun Company, the egg producer, told the newspaper that "the egg white looks bloody red because the hens were menstruating."

But the official's explanation was rejected by Ji Haifeng, a researcher with Beijing-based China Agricultural University. Ji said hens cannot menstruate, the paper said.

Ji suspected the red egg white was caused by the hen's inflamed fallopian tubes due to a serious infection or dubious feed. He warned residents not to eat such eggs, the paper said.
