'Mental patient' grabbed off by cops during TV interview
A man who escaped from a mental hospital in Wuhan, central Hubei Province and traveled to Guangzhou in southern Guangdong Province to prove he was normal was taken away by plainclothes cops on Wednesday, New Express Daily reported.
Xu Wu, 43, was dragged away by force outside a Guangzhou television station as he was being interviewed by TV reporters in the company of his father and a friend. Xu's father said those men did not wear uniforms nor showed any warrant, but they claimed they were policemen and took Xu away in a taxi. He and their friend failed to stop them.
The TV reporters managed to keep one of those men and sent him to a local police station because the man refused to reveal his identity.
According to the newspaper, this man was picked up by Wuhan police on Wednesday night as they brought certificates to prove they were indeed policemen.
Xu told the newspaper before he was taken away that he used to work as a firefighter for a big state-owned company. Several years ago he sued his employer over a salary dispute. After his request was denied by the court, he started to make petitions to government departments in Beijing and Wuhan. In December 2006, he was nabbed in Beijing by Wuhan police and sent to a mental hospital.
Wu has spent more than four years in the hospital. On April 14, he used a bed sheet to twist the steel bars on his window into a gap and escaped from the hospital. He then went to Guangzhou with the help of his friend and was planning to take a psychiatric text to prove he was normal. But he was taken away before he had an opportunity. There was no news about his whereabouts, the report said.
