Mercury prompts HK recall of lunch meat

SOME 480,000 cans of luncheon meat were recalled from Hong Kong markets after a customer found mercury in the product.

The Hong Kong Center for Food Safety warned residents not to eat "Greatwall Brand Chopped Pork and Ham" imported from Tianjin Municipality after it received a complaint on July 17 from a customer who said some silvery droplets were in the can.

A test confirmed that these droplets were liquid mercury, with a total weight of 0.4 gram.

The CFS ordered the local distributing agent Yuen Tai Trading Co to recall the luncheon meat.

The company set up a hotline, 2549-0016, for consumers. The incident is still under investigation.

The recall has started and will only affect products in Hong Kong market.

The Greatwall Brand luncheon meat made in Tianjin has been popular in Hong Kong for many years.

The center also tested another 13 samples of the same product from different batches. Preliminary examination found no mercury in the samples. Detailed test results are pending.
