Mercury victim held over poisoning
POLICE have detained a victim of mercury-spiked Sprite after he allegedly admitted covering up for the real culprit 鈥 his secret lover who poisoned his can of drink.
Loopholes in his testimony trying to blame Coca-Cola led police to discover that victim Ma Sai was lying, Beijing Morning Post quoted police as saying today.
They found that his co-worker surnamed Liu had poured mercury from a broken thermometer into his drink last November, the report said.
She held a grudge because she was having a secret affair with Ma, 21, despite her being married with a two-year old daughter, an insider told the newspaper.
Ma vomited mercury beads after drinking the Sprite, and Liu told him the truth while he was being treated in hospital, police allege.
Ma confessed that he did not tell police the truth because he did not want to incriminate Liu.
A Beijing lawyer named Ying Fuqiang said Ma would be charged with harboring criminals.
Chen Yi, a public relations official with the Coca-Cola Company, said the police investigation proved the mercury could not have been added in the bottling system. The company earlier said it believed a third party had "maliciously" tampered with the drink.
Coca-Cola paid Ma 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) to cover his medical bills. Chen said the company had no plans to recover the money.
Beijing police said a second case of poisoned Sprite in January was still being investigated.
