Metro driver killed in test

ONE driver was killed and another injured during a test run of a subway train yesterday in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province.

A Kunming government spokesman said a subway train derailed, causing the vehicle's heating device to fall on the drivers in the cabin.

The southwestern city's first Metro line, which was scheduled for trial operation next month, was undergoing a non-loaded test run.

The government has set up a team to probe the accident, said the spokesman.

It was the third accident in two weeks relating to subway lines under construction around the country.

On December 31, five workers were killed and 18 others injured after a platform collapsed in a parking lot being built to support a Metro line in Shanghai.

On January 2, three workers were injured after a tunnel of a subway line under construction collapsed in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The accidents have triggered public concern about safety, as cities are rushing to build subway networks in an effort to ease severe road congestion.
