Metro firm ignores suspension order
THE construction of a Metro line in an east China city is continuing despite a suspension order issued by local authorities after it was found to be violating environmental protection rules.
Metro line 2 in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, failed to pass an environmental protection assessment and was ordered to halt construction immediately, Wuxi Environmental Protection Bureau said on its website last month.
However, work continues, the Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
The Wuxi Metro Development Co Ltd is said to have launched the Metro line project before it was approved by the environmental watchdog. The line was started in June last year, but it failed to be approved by the bureau in August as its influence on the surrounding environment failed to satisfy the necessary requirements.
The bureau asked Wuxi Metro to submit a report regarding improvements by May 30 and ordered that work was not allowed to resume until it had gained the proper authorization.
But the construction site is still a hive of activity.
"We didn't receive notice of the suspension of the project," a worker told the newspaper.
"My daughter is going to take part in the senior high school entrance examination. The construction site is producing huge noise every day," said a woman surnamed Wang, who lives with her family next to the site.
