Metro riders injured when escalator lurched backward
TWENTY-FOUR subway passengers including a preganant woman were injured after an escalator at a Metro station moved oddly backward this morning in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.
Some seriously wounded people are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Luohu Hospital. The wounded pregnant woman, surnamed Gong, was in stable condition with scraped fingers at the hospital.
As of 2pm, one person suffering fractured leg is awaiting operation. Five patients with bruises and abrasions in legs and arms had their wounds stitched by doctors, according to Sznews.com, the city's official news website.
A witness said some victims lost their teeth after crashing to the ground of the platform.
Some riders were said to have rolled off and fell onto others when the ascending escalator at the Guomao Station of Metro Line 1 suddenly reversed at about 9am, a Metro company's spokeswoman said today.
But she declined to reveal more details, saying it takes time for investigation.
An injured rider, who gave his surname Huang, complained to reporters that they were left lying on the platform for nearly 20 minutes before Metro workers came to their help.
