'Mickey Mouse' gang faces trial
A GANG of 28 members in Chongqing faced 11 charges today including assault, vandalism, arson, robbery, extortion and using force.
The gang, headed by Li Yi, known as "Mickey Mouse," faced trial in Kaixian County People's court in the southwestern China city.
Li started the gang in 1991 after he was released from prison, the court heard. His gang seized control of transport and free market enterprises in the county's Linjiang Town.
Unlike other flashy gangsters seized in Chongqing, Li kept his gang members separated and most knew each other only by nicknames, the court was told.
Prosecutors said Li and his gang set fire to businesses and caused random fights to keep local residents under a reign of fear. The trial is estimated to last three days.
