Microsoft boss mum on fake degree
THE former president of Microsoft China Tang Jun said he's waiting for the "right time" to explain accusations of faking his diploma in his early career.
Tang failed to make a scheduled interview yesterday by Shanghai-based CBN yesterday to "clear up the queries," but his assistant said he will need one more week to face direct confrontation.
As one of China's most prominent managers, Tang is mired by an academic credential scandal after Fang Zhouzi, a "science cop" famous for fighting forgery, started to post evidence of Tang's fake resume on July 1.
Tang told Beijing News today that he can understand people questioning his honesty. But he said that's only because they don't know the truth, which he would not reveal just now 鈥 he was waiting for the "right time."
Tang said he was always honest and was being brave to remain silent in such a scandal. But he also said honesty weigh little in success.
"Losers cheat some people and get caught, while winners cheat the whole world all the time," the newspaper quoted Tang as saying.
Tang admitted earlier that he was not a graduate from California Institute of Technology, which he made people believe in his memoirs and interviews. He holds a diploma from Pacific Western University in California.
The university's Hawaii branch was closed by United States government in 2006 for selling degrees. Tang's degree was in electronic engineering, not computer science as he has claimed in his books.
Tang's scandal became a warning for others. In a Chinese wiki site hudong.com, changes made to celebrities' resumes increased 70 to 80 percent this week, China Business News reported today.
