Microwaves crack a porcelain problem
A MICROWAVE kiln that cuts the firing time for porcelain to no more than two hours, compared to the usual six to seven, has gone on show at an international exhibition.
The new kilns greatly improve efficiency and save energy, said Peng Hu, of Innov-Source Industrial High-Tech Co Ltd in Jingdezhen, China’s porcelain capital in east China’s Jiangxi Province.
The company’s microwave kiln features at the 2015 International Ceramic Expo, which opened in Jingdezhen at the weekend.
The new technology was developed after a year of research by Peng, a microwave expert, and Duan Zhenmin, a local porcelain heating expert.
Microwave kilns reduce the incidence of cracking in the heating process, Peng said.
The rate of finished, unbroken products using microwave kilns reached 90 percent or higher, compared to the 70 percent of electric kilns.
More than 50 universities and scientific research institutions brought their advanced porcelain-making technology to the five-day exhibition, which also attracted companies from Germany, Britain and Japan.
