Middle school’s smartest kids rewarded with a meaty feast

A GROUP of 45 pupils at a middle school in east China will soon be tucking into a pork feast with their families, after being awarded meaty prizes for their academic excellence.

Instead of handing out cash to his most studious students at the start of the new year, as is the tradition, the headmaster of Shiqiaotou Middle School in Wenling, a city in a rural area of east China’s Zhejiang Province, decided to reward their efforts with pork.

At a ceremony last week, the 45 “excellent” pupils were handed either 2.5 kilograms or 1.5kg of the meat, depending on whether they ranked as first- or second-prize winners.

“We used to give out the meat before the Chinese Lunar New Year, but this year we delayed it as the school closed much earlier than normal due to the weather,” said headmaster Wu Guanghui.

The novel prizes were introduced in 2014 as an alternative to the regular cash prizes of 50 yuan (US$7.65).

“We changed to pork — of the same value — so that entire families can sit down and enjoy the prize together,” Wu said, adding that this year’s winners took home 84kg of pork.

He did not say if there was a vegetarian option.

Eighth-grader Chen Gaoxuan, who picked up a meaty treat for a second year running, said he was unsure about the scheme at first, but is now a fan.

“I’m very proud to be able to share the pork with my family, though it did feel a bit weird when I won it the first time.”

He said he was happy when his father gave some of the meat to a cousin, making a point of saying where it had come from.
