Midges cause truck to fall into lake
SWARMS of midges on a lakeside road in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, caused a truck to slip out of control and plunge into the water, the Wuhan Evening News reported today.
The truck driver surnamed Gao slammed on the brakes to avoid a car in the next lane but the swarms of midges made the road slippery and the truck skid into the lake yesterday morning, police said.
Midges thrive in waterside areas and local sanitation workers said they can collect bags of dead midges each day.
Records indicate the East Lake has nutrient-rich water and usually has an outburst of midges around November and December if the weather is mild.
Migratory birds that prey on midges are expected to arrive soon and most of these mosquito-like flies will vanish within a week, said Tang Zhaozi, director of Wuhan University Animal Specimen Museum.
