Midwives fired for selling fetuses
THREE midwives in a hospital in northwest China have been fired for illegally trading aborted fetuses to a biotechnology company for medical research, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.
The trio faces up to three years in jail on charges of insulting a corpse. The health bureau of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, punished the hospital on Friday for mishandling dead babies and providing illegal abortions.
A woman surnamed Cao went for an induced abortion at Huaren Hospital on June 16. After the operation, Cao's husband surnamed Wang saw a man enter the operating room and then leave with a black bag.
Wang, who said he heard a baby crying, followed the man to Shaanxi Aierfu ActivTissue Engineering Co, which sells artificial skin and corneas. He then called the police because he thought his aborted baby was sold.
The company denied it had a deal with the hospital to buy aborted fetuses.
Police are still investigating the case.
