Migrant workers given no pay but sticks
AUTHORITIES in central China are investigating a pay dispute in which 118 migrant workers were beaten by 300 people with sticks when they tried to obtain their unpaid wages.
The labor union in Hubei Province has sent a team to Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province where the workers from Hubei Province were hired by a company affiliated to Xi'an Railway Engineering Co to build a section of railway, but they were denied their wages and got beaten up.
More than 30 workers were wounded in the 40-minute attack on July 21 and are now being treated in hospital for fractures in head, arms and legs, reported China N ews Service today.
A crowd of unidentified people suddenly rushed to the workers' temporary shelters, dragged them out and started to beat them at noon.
Some workers who begged them to stop or tried to escape were caught back and beaten seriously.
Sun Huazhou, the manager in charge of the project, said he knew nothing about the attack.
