Milk power tainted with deadly bacterium
Two batches of infant formula manufactured by Cradle Dairy and Happy Prince Dairy in northeast Heilongjiang Province were found to contain a life-threatening bacterium, quality supervisors in Guangdong Province said yesterday.
Tests showed Cradle's Gaiweijian formula produced last July and Happy Prince's Jin100 formula produced last September were tainted with enterobacter sakazakii, which can cause septicemia, meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis with a mortality rate of over 50 percent.
The deadly bacterium is not allowable in infant food and dietary supplements, according to the national food safety standard.
Enterobacter sakazakii can be killed in high temperature, Wang Dingmian, an industrial expert, told the New Express.
The tainted dairy products were only found in stores in Yingde and Chaozhou, both in Guangdong Province. Big supermarkets like Carrefour and ParknShop didn't sell them in Guangzhou and other cities in the province, the paper said.
