Millionaire given death penalties over deadly blast

A former coal mine owner, once a millionaire, was sentenced to death this morning by a court in the central Hunan Province for ordering others to plant a bomb, which killed two and injured several others.

Zhou Longbin started feud with one of the victims, Zhou Bingyuan, when fighting for the coal mine ownership. Zhou Longbin recruited Su Jiali to set off explosives in the parking lot of Tianhu Hotel in downtown Chenzhou City in December 2003 to kill the man, prosecutors said

Zhou Bingyuan and Chen Jianwen, the convict's accomplice, died at the scene. More than 10 vehicles, including a bus passing by the hotel, were damaged, and window of nearby buildings were shattered.

The convict escaped since then and was arrested in July 2011.

His another partner, Zhou Xinping, was sentenced to five years behind the bars for paying Su 200,000 yuan (US$31,400) and helping him to escape from the police hunt, the Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court said.

Su was also given the death sentence and was executed in 2010.
