Millions allocated to deluge damage
THE central government has allocated 31 million yuan (US$4.54 million) in relief funds for Chongqing Municipality, where the death toll from storm and gales has climbed to 31.
The funds, jointly issued by the Finance and Civil Affairs ministries, will be used for resettlement and home reconstruction, the Civil Affairs Ministry's Website said yesterday.
The gales, torrential rain and hail that has lashed the city since Monday had left 31 people dead and one missing as of 4pm yesterday, with more than 85,000 people relocated, the ministry's figures showed.
More than 8,000 houses collapsed and over 60,000 houses were damaged in the region.
The ministry and the State Disaster Relief Commission also sent emergency teams to the storm-hit areas to oversee relief work in central China's Hunan Province where Wednesday's rain has left 10 people dead and three missing as of 1pm Friday.
In eastern China's Jiangxi Province, seven people are dead and five are missing after floods and landslides wreaked havoc in the past two days, local authorities said yesterday.
Five people had died in landslides and two had drowned in flood waters in Dingnan County of Ganzhou City as of noon yesterday, said the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.
The torrential rain, which started on Wednesday afternoon, destroyed 515 residential buildings and forced the temporary relocations of 4,430 people in Ganzhou.
The rain also disrupted traffic on some roads and inundated some villages and schools.
Egong Township in Dingnan County received the highest rainfall of 450 millimeters from 3pm Wednesday to 8am yesterday.
In the southern Guangdong Province, rainstorms have left six dead and further three missing over the past two days.
More than 3,000 houses had collapsed, the Guangdong flood control and drought relief headquarters said. The disaster also has caused direct economic losses of 800 million yuan.
More than 50,000 people, mainly in eastern and northern Guangdong, have been relocated.
In the hard-hit Shaoguan City, storms have killed four people, left three missing and damaged 22,670 hectares of crops.
Casualties were also reported in the southwestern Guizhou Province.
