Mine caps second leak

A COPPER mine at the center of a river pollution scandal has reported a new leak, but capped it quickly and avoided exacerbating damage already done to the river, the company which runs the mine said on Saturday.

"Staff on duty at the Zijinshan Copper Mine found a new leak at No. 3 waste tank at around 10:30pm on Friday. They took immediate action to cap it," Zijin Mining Group said in a statement. About 500 cubic meters of plant waste was discharged.

The mining group is under fire after 9,100 cubic meters of waste leaked from its copper mine into the Tingjiang River on July 3.

The group said it had suspended two officials in charge of environmental protection. Three other executives have been detained by public security authorities in Shanghang County, where the mine is located.

The scandal also led to the sacking of three government officials.

A delay in detecting the initial pollution was attributed to monitoring facilities in the lower reaches of the Tingjiang River having been damaged.
