Mine flood survivors out of hospital

ALL the survivors of a coal mine flood that killed 38 in north China in late March have now been discharged from hospital.

The last of the 115 miners rescued from the flooded Wangjialing coal mine was allowed home on May 13, Shanxi Province authorities said in a statement on Friday.

The identities of the 115 survivors and the 38 dead have been confirmed.

But names of the victims would not be released at their families' request, the statement said.

Luo Lin, chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, blamed the flooding on the owner, Huajin Coking Coal Company, for its poor safety measures and negligence, saying the accident "should and could have been avoided."

Prosecutors have approved the arrest of nine engineers and technicians alleged to have failed to take proper measures before the March 28 flood.

The 115 miners rescued had been trapped underground for more than a week.
