Miner sued again, slapped with a 19.5m-yuan fine

XINYI government in the southern Guangdong Province has sued two subsidiaries of China's largest gold producer and demanded 19.5 million yuan (US$ 2.94 milion) in compensation for its tin mine dam burst that left 28 people dead and missing.

The city officials would seek further compensation if the final audit report showed actual losses exceed 19.5 million yuan, said Zijin Mining Group in a statement last night.

Xinyi Zijin Mining Co and Xinyi Baoyuan Mining Co received the notice of the pending lawsuit from Xinyi People's Court on Saturday, China Business Weekly reported today.

Authorities are still investigating the accident in which a tailing dam collapsed in a rain-triggered mudslide last month. Design flaws of the dam have been confirmed as the major cause in a government report.

This will be the second fine Zijin received from government this year. The group was fined 9.56 million yuan on Octorber 7 by Fujian Provincial
Government after its copper mine polluted the local Tingjiang River with toxic waste in July.
