Mining boss detained over toxic spill

POLICE in Fujian Province detained the vice president of China's leading gold producer after a toxic spill at one of its copper plant killed thousands tons of fish.

Zijin Mining Group confirmed today that its vice president Chen Jiahong was under detention for his responsibility in the major pollution accident since Tuesday, when trading in Zijin shares was halted.

The company was blamed for the industry's worst environmental accident for years. Over 9,100 cubic meters of acidic waste water spilled from the company's Zijinshan copper mine in Shanghang County in Fujian, polluted local Tingjiang River and killed 1.9 million kilograms of fish.

The leak took place on July 3 but the company waited nine days to disclose the accident.

The company said it will provide further details after investigation was finished.

The leak has cost the jobs three local government officials. The head of Shanghang County has been suspended. A vice head of the county has been asked to resign and the local head of the environmental protection authority was sacked.

The polluting factory's manager, deputy manager and environmental protection officer were also detained earlier.
