Ministry discourages early finish of rail projects

China's Ministry of Railways made it clear that time needed to build a railway should not be shortened at will so as to guarantee the safety of the country's high-speed railways.

Construction schedule must be strictly followed and quality is the core of any projects, said Sheng Guangzu, the railway minister, at an internal meeting, Beijing Times reported today.

More efforts should be made to improve the quality of signal and power supply systems for high-speed railways. A disaster prevention mechanism should be introduced to enable bullet trains to react fast in the event of a natural disaster, Sheng said.

The ministry has pledged to learn from the fatal train crash on July 23 in Wenzhou in eastern Zhejiang Province. The worst train accident since 2008 has claimed 40 lives and injured more than 100.
