Ministry forbids power cut as bureaucrats try to meet energy target
STATE industrial watchdog said today it wouldn't tolerate local governments to cut power supply to homes and businesses in order to meet their energy-saving targets.
Zhu Hongren, spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Information, strongly criticized the phenomenon during a press conference in Beijing amid a recent news report that Zaoqiang County in Hebei Province cut its electricity supply to only four hours a day to reach the target.
"It is never allowed and will be firmly dealt with if this is discovered," Zhu told journalists during the news briefing.
The power cut in Zaoqiang started this month with electricity available only between 6pm to 10pm, a report in the People's Daily said. It copied the practice of Anping, another county in the province, which put the power cut policy on hold after online outcry led to an investigation by the National Development and Reform Commission.
Meanwhile, Zhuhai City in the southern Guangdong Province has ordered to the public sector to switch off air conditioning in order to reach the city's emission-reduction target, but schools, network server stations and hospitals were not included.
