Ministry official jailed for taking 2m yuan in bribes

A FORMER high-ranking official of the Ministry of Public Security was jailed for 12 years for taking nearly 2 million yuan (US$295,008) in bribes. including 1 million yuan from disgraced GOME tycoon Huang Guangyu.

Xiang Huaizhu, 46, deputy head of economic crime investigation at the Ministry of Public Security, was found guilty of taking advantage of his position to cover business fraud of several companies including Huang's GOME Electrical Appliances Co, said Beijing No.2 Intermediate Court today.

His personal property of 1 million yuan was confiscated.

His wife Li Shanjuan was sentenced to one year and seven months in jail for helping him take bribes of 170,000 yuan.

Li worked at the auditing department of the Beijing bureau.

Huang, once the richest man on the mainland, was jailed for 14 years in May for bribery, illegal trading and insider trading.
