Ministry official, wife commit suicides after financial scandals

AN official from the Ministry of Agriculture and his wife have committed suicide after financial scandals, a Shanghai newspaper reported today.

Zhang Xiwu, the former director of the Grassland Supervision Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, and his wife were found dead in their home on April 17, according to the China Business News report.

Stress could have caused the tragedy as Zhang was being investigated for financial scandals. The couple committed suicide at the night of April 15, an anonymous official from the ministry said.

Zhang admitted accepting a 50,000-yuan (US$7310) bribe from a Fujian company and he admitted accepting another 9,000 yuan from a Fujian farming bureau. Zhang returned the money during the investigation.

Ma Youxiang, the former vice director of the center under the Ministry of Agriculture, has been made director.

The Ministry of Agriculture has made no comment.
