Ministry says vinegar made from additives is safe

THE Health Ministry says vinegar, whether made from rice or from blending food additives is safe for consumption as long as it meets the quality standards, according to today's Beijing News.

The vinegar can either be brewed from rice or blended from glacial acetic acid and food addictives. For the latter, it must contain at least 50 percent of brewed vinegar, says Deng Haihua, the ministry spokesperson.

The use of food additives must follow national standards, Deng says.

The ministry's clarification came after media reports cited Wang Jianzhong, deputy director of the Shanxi Vinegar Industry Association as saying that only 5 percent of the vinegar sold in the market was genuine Shanxi vinegar.

The province is famous for its production and consumption of vinegar.
