Minivan kills 2 students, teacher

TWO students and a teacher were killed when a minivan plowed into youngsters arriving at school in a Beijing suburb yesterday morning.

Twenty-one others were injured, including six who are in a critical condition, Pinggu District officials said last night.

The driver of the minivan loaded with vegetables from a wholesale market in Shunyi District apparently lost control and plowed into a crowd of people near the Machangying Central Primary School shortly before 7am.

Police have detained the driver, Liang Guishan from Chengde in Beijing's neighboring Hebei Province.

A witness said Liang was trying to avoid a pedestrian at the time. However, police have not confirmed this.

The 66-year-old pedestrian was also injured and sent to hospital.

The other 20 hurt in the incident were all students.

Some of them had just got off a school bus and were walking toward the school when the minivan rammed into them, witnesses said.

Two boys, Chen Zhaoxin, 8, Jiang Yuhang, 11, and 31-year-old teacher Wang Deguo died despite emergency treatment.
