Minivan makes a better home
17:18:52A FAMILY of four in central China's Henan Province have found a new solution to sky-high housing prices--by converting a minivan into a house to live in.
Saving for years but still unable to buy a simple apartment amid the city's rocketing housing market, 37-year-old mechanic Feng Zeng finally decided to create one for his wife and two school-age daughters beside his repair shop close to an expressway, reported today's China Youth Daily.
He removed the original seats and put two beds in their place and installed home appliances with electric wiring to modify the minibus into two living rooms and a dining room. Inside there is a cooling system to reduce the effect of the summer heat as well as a few toiletries for daily use.
Compared with their former living space--a bike shed, the compact but more home-like house was already cosy enough for the family, who said they were "more than satisfactory" about their four years living there.
The minivan cost Feng 6,000 yuan (US$902.63)--making the special house quite a good bargain considering the city's average housing price has reached 10,000 yuan per square meter, the newspaper said.
However, as the two girls grow up, the living space needs to be expanded and this has become the family's new concern. Feng said he dreamed of buying a bigger van with a higher ceiling in the future.
As to buying a real house, "that's nonsense," said Feng.
