Miracle tot who survived fall from 25 stories now walking

A MIRACLE tot who survived a savage beating from a stranger and a fall from the 25th floor of a building into some shrubbery in southwest China’s Chongqing city last year is now able to walk, Nanfang Daily reported today.

The boy, Yuanyuan, who is about 2, has made progress in rehabilitation, and he is able to raise his arms and walk independently, though he still cannot grasp with his hands and his left foot is weak, his father said in a weibo post.

The father said he hopes his son will fully recover and be discharged from the hospital soon, the report said.

The boy was injured on November 25, 2013 when Yuanyuan’s grandmother took the boy down in an elevator in their residential building in Chongqing’s Changshou District.

As the door opened at the first floor, she took the baby stroller out first. A girl got in but when the grandmother turned to fetch her grandson the doors had closed.

The girl, surnamed Li, later told police she beat up a boy in the elevator of her apartment building, kicking him in the head, and then took him to her 25th-floor home where she beat him some more.

The girl said she then “played with the boy” on the balcony and he fell off, an earlier report said.

Yuanyuan was found lying in shrubbery near the building. He was lying in a pool of blood by the time security guards got to him. The boy had skull fractures and bleeding in his lungs and underwent surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University.

The girl is too young to be detained or charged, police said. Li's family has paid 78,000 yuan (US$12,700) for medical treatment for the boy.
