Mismanagement blamed for baby deaths

A PRELIMINARY investigation has found the deaths of five new-born babies were caused by serious mismanagement and a failure to properly disinfect a local health center.

Six babies were transferred from the Maternal and Child Care Service Center of Ji County in Tianjin last week but five of them had died in Beijing Children's Hospital by March 22. The survivor is now in a stable condition, CCTV's Night News reported yesterday.

All the six babies had been kept in contaminated incubators at the center and the medical staff there were ignorant about preventing infections, the report said.

Two fathers who visited the center had complained about cockroaches on the beds, walls and floors, according to a China Youth Daily report yesterday.

As well the layout and management of the pediatrics department were flawed and the safety of procedures could not guaranteed. The pediatrics department has 31 beds.

The Public Health Bureau of Tianjin Municipality has helped organize disinfection and retraining.
