Missile fired by mistake kills captain
TAIWAN officials said a failure to follow procedures had resulted in the mistaken firing of a missile that hit a fishing boat, killing its captain and injuring three crew members.
A patrol boat was undergoing inspection at a military base in southern Taiwan ahead of a mock exercise yesterday when the missile was fired and traveled some 75 kilometers.
It did not explode but pierced the boat and killed one Taiwan fisherman. It then sank, officials said.
Zhang Zhijun, the Chinese mainland’s Taiwan affairs chief, urged authorities to give a “responsible explanation” for the incident.
Taiwan’s defense department spokesman Chen Chung-chi told reporters: “That this is politically motivated, or this is to create crisis in the surrounding situation, this is not the case.”
