Mistress rebuffs bribery accusation

A MASSEUSE in Guangdong Province faced trial for a rare charge of bribery on Monday for allegedly taking 659,000 yuan (US$96,000) while being the mistress of former chief of the province's salt administration.

Bai Liqing, who used to be a masseuse in a spa center in Guangdong, confessed in court that she began sleeping with Shen Zhiqiang, 61, former general manager of Guangdong Salt Industry Corporation, in 2002.

Yet she denied she'd taken bribes from He Weiwen, a local carton factory boss, in an under-the-table bidding deal with Shen in which she acted as middleman. She said she took the money because Shen told her to.

Besides Shen, six other officials in the Guangdong salt administration bureau were also involved in the case which was believed to be one of the biggest salt related grafts ever in China.
