Mites turn panda fur from black to white
The whitening of the black eye circles of a panda at an eastern China zoo is likely caused by mites, and the condition is being treated, the zoo in Hangzhou City has announced.
It received a pair of two-year-old panda siblings — Cheng Da and Cheng Xiao — from Sichuan Province in September.
Tourists noticed the dark circles around Cheng Xiao’s eyes had disappeared and the fur had turned white. A picture was published online and sparked concern the panda was sick.
Panda feeder Wang Lifen said the color change was because the black fur had shed, possibly due to mites.
Cheng Xiao had similar symptoms while at the Chengdu panda base, Wang said. “The treatment requires time, but fans don’t need to worry,” he added.
