Mning official jailed, fined 170m yuan for illegal mining

THE former chief of a central China county's mining authority has been jailed for 20 years for corruption as well as running a coal mine that had dodged 18.7 million yuan (US$2.74 million) in taxes.

Hao Pengjun, former Party secretary and director of Puxian County Mining Bureau, Shanxi Province, and his wife Yu Xiaohong were also fined 170 million yuan yesterday for the evaded taxes by Shanxi Puxian's People's Court, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.

Yu, former director of Puxian Civil Affairs Bureau, was jailed for 13 years for illegally buying explosives and tax evasion.

Yu launched Puxian Chengnanling Mining Co Ltd in 2000 and took charge of the company's operation, with Yu handling sales and accounting, the court was told.

To obtain the business license, Hao faked documents and registered Yu's brother as the company's legal representative.

From 2003 to 2008, the company evaded 17.81 yuan in taxes over transactions with 22 other companies, accounting for 82 percent of the total taxes it owed.

From August 2006 to January 2008, Hao arranged Yu to twice buy more explosives than the company's allowance for its mining.

Hao had also misused 230,000 yuan of public funds for the mine and refused to pay back the money. He embezzled another 250,000 yuan, the court was told.

Hao and Yu were kicked out of the Party and sacked.
