Mob lawyer admits perjury in second trial
THE former attorney of a suspected mob boss admitted perjury in his second trial today, in a dramatic turn of the widely observed case.
Li Zhuang, who represented Gong Gangmo, an alleged mob master in Chongqing Municipality, pleaded guilty to falsifying evidence and obstructing testimony shortly after the trial began when he was asked to state the reason for his appeal.
Li did not raise any new reasons for his appeal and even his lawyers were not prepared for the sudden change.
The lawyer was sentenced to two and a half years in jail in January 8. All eight witnesses, including his former client Gong, did not testify as the court said they were not willing to.
Li's lawyer Gao Zicheng said Li's new confession could not change the fact that the prosecutors had no evidence to prove perjury.
Gong appeared in court today but when cross-examined about details of the case, said he had "no memory of it at all" or could "not understand the question," according to Caijing Magazine today.
Gao said the most important question is how Li could try to persuade a detained suspect to commit perjury while Chongqing police watched and videotaped every minute of their meeting.
Gao said he would continue to ask the court to show the video clips, according to Southern Metropolis Daily today.
Over 20 lawyers signed and handed to the court a public letter pleading for the case to be transferred outside Chongqing to guarantee impartiality.
