Mob violence in Hainan

HAINAN Province police are probing an incident where nearly 100 people attacked an urban management office in the capital city Haikou on Tuesday night, yesterday's Hainan Special Zone News reported.

Three people were injured in the violence.

A truck owner who had his vehicle seized by urban management officers for illegally transporting garbage organized the attack to demand the return of his truck, the newspaper said.

Haikou's urban management authority is carrying out a campaign to crack down on truck drivers who have been blamed for dumping garbage at undesignated areas and polluting the environment.

The truck was seized at 10:20pm on Tuesday and the owner was taken for questioning, the newspaper reported.

Half an hour later, a mob of nearly 100 people, allegedly organized by the truck owner, rushed to the office. They beat up office employees and vandalized the office. Two security guards and one officer were injured, the report said.

Police were alerted and dispersed the mob at 2am on Wednesday. Later that morning, the mob came back demanding the truck be returned.

The truck owner is in hospital for scratches suffered when being pulled from under the truck as he attempted to prevent officers from taking the vehicle, the report said.
