Model killer's death sentence upheld by court

THE original death sentence, with a two-year reprieve, for a man who killed a super model after having sex with her, has been upheld.

The Yunnan Province Higher People's Court announced its final judgment and upheld the original sentence.

The Lijiang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Wei Lei after finding he killed Xu Qian during a business trip from Qingdao, Shandong Province, to Yunnan's Lijiang City in late December, 2007, according to a Legal Daily report.

The court ordered that Wei compensate Xu's family 400,000 yuan (US$58,500).

Wei, 35-years-old and unemployed, planned to open a boutique store in Qingdao in 2007, selling handcrafts and clothing from Lijiang.

He met Xu through a friend who worked for a fashion magazine. Wei hired Xu to improve the image for his planned shop and promised to pay her 7,000 yuan for a four-day business trip to Lijiang in November, 2007.

Xu, a Qingdao native, was China's Miss Tourism Queen International in 2004.

Wei and Xu arrived in Lijiang on November 3 and booked into a hotel. Wei confessed he had sex with Xu twice after chatting with her about sex the next day. They continued talking and started to discuss death, according to Wei.

Wei said both of them felt suicidal and he proposed they die together. Wei said Xu was not willing to kill him so he grabbed her throat and choked her to death.

Wei said he then used a knife to slash his wrists but woke up the next morning. Xu's boyfriend, Li Jinyu, was trying to contact her and eventually tracked Wei down.
