Mom killed child, hid her body

A mother in southeast China hid the body of her five-year-old daughter, claiming she had gone missing after choking her to death out of frustration of not having a son, a newspaper reported yesterday.

The mother surnamed Wu turned to violence against her daughter after having an abortion two years ago because she accidentally took too much medicine. She often lashed out and tortured the girl in anger and frustration of losing the child, whom she believed to be a boy, the Strait Metropolis Daily reported.

The little girl, identified as Xiaomei, died when Wu covered her mouth, suffocating her on a November afternoon in the city of Fuqing, Fujian Province, the report said. Wu carried the body to a local hostel at night, then went to the nearby police station, claiming Xiaomei had gone missing two days earlier in a park.

Notices for the missing girl were posted by Xiaomei's father everywhere near the park. The guilty mother turned herself in to police several days later, overcome with emotion. Fuqing City People's Procuratorate charged her with intentional injury, the report said.

Xiaomei was often beaten, scalded and slashed when Wu felt depressed or upset since the 2009 abortion, according to neighbors. The couple always hoped to have a boy, but Wu gave birth to two girls in the last five years. Xiaomei was the older one.
