Mom sold 2 babies within 13 months
A SINGLE mother sold her two baby daughters through an online child-trafficking platform within 13 months, it was reported yesterday.
The 20-year-old woman, surnamed Jiang, from Jiashan County in the eastern province of Zhejiang, became pregnant in 2011.
When her family and her boyfriend’s parents rejected her, Jiang felt she had nowhere to turn and decided to sell the child, Legal Daily reported.
She found an “adoption” website and made contact with a couple from central China’s Henan Province.
Jiang delivered a baby girl in Henan in May 2012, for whom the couple paid her 7,000 yuan (US$1,140).
By the end of 2012, Jiang was pregnant again and once more tried to find buyer through the Internet.
This time, a couple in their 30s, from Xuzhou City in the eastern province of Jiangsu, were the customers.
In June 2013, Jiang delivered her second girl and received 21,000 yuan from the couple, the paper reported.
Jiang was caught by police in an Internet cafe in Jiashan on February 20, during a nationwide crackdown on online baby trafficking. She is now on bail.
In raids, police held 1,094 suspects and rescued 382 babies.
They were sent to welfare centers until their parents could be found.
Human traffickers have increasingly turned to the Internet, said Liu Ancheng, director of the Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.
