Money forging factory busted in Chengdu, 11 arrested

POLICE of Chengdu, the capital of southwestern Sichuan Province have nabbed 11 suspects involved in banknote forgery and seized five tons of banknote paper already printed with metallic watermarks, enough to print 10 million fake 100-yuan notes, equal to US$158 million.

The Ministry of Public Security asked Chengdu police in 2009 to investigate a local man surnamed Meng who was believed to be the leader of a money forging gang with an underground print shop, the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported today.

After two years of investigation, the police finally located Meng and found he was in charge of the early phase of fake money production in Chengdu; the finishing process was done in south China's Guangdong Province.

Chengdu police raided Meng's underground factory and captured 11 suspects including Meng himself on August 11, 2011.

The police also seized five tons of banknote paper in Meng's factory, enough to print 1 billion yuan of 100-yuan banknotes.
