Monk arrested for fatal driving accident

AN abbot in south China's Fujian Province has been arrested for making a phone call while driving and hitting a motorcycle, leaving two dead and two injured this month.

Prosecutors of Zhangpu County said the suspect surnamed Lin was the abbot of a local Buddhist temple. On the afternoon of January 12, Lin was driving on Highway 324 to Zhangzhou when he made a phone call around 2:50pm.

As the call didn't get through, Lin accelerated to change to the fast lane. As he was looking at the rear view mirror, he didn't notice a motorcycle driving in the front in the same direction. Lin hit the motorcycle. Two children on the motorcycle, aged 3 and 14, were killed on the spot. Two adults were injured and sent to the hospital.

Police didn't reveal the victims' identities. They said Lin made a phone call while driving and failed to notice the road situation. He violated China's Road Traffic Safety Law and should take full responsibility for the accident.
