Monkey or traffic light? Netizens deem Spring Festival Gala mascot 'too ugly'
FAMOUS artist Han Meilin has denied connection with the 3D version of a mascot monkey of China’s most famous annual Spring Festival Gala, which has drawn an extensive backlash from netizens who think it’s too ugly.
Han said he designed a monkey head in a Chinese ink style as mascot for China Central Television’s annual Spring Festival Gala as 2016 is the Year of the Monkey, but didn’t design its 3D image.
The 3D image, released by CCTV on Thursday evening, instantly headlined Twitter-like Weibo.
Netizens seem quite unimpressed by the mascot, nicknamed Kang Kang, meaning healthy in Chinese.
Some netizens said the three-color design in Kang Kang reminds them of traffic light. Others questioned why there are two strange balls under its ear.
“I was going to name my newborn son as Kang Kang. But I soon dropped the idea when I saw the mascot,” a netizen joked.
Han also designed the "Fuwa" mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
