Moon Festival date set for September 12

THE Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, falls on September 12 this year.
All public services will be closed from Saturday, September 10, to Monday, September 12, according to the State Council.

The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of Chinese Lunar Calendar, a date when the moon is at its fullest and roundest and Chinese family members usually reunite for big celebrations.

Mooncakes are one of the traditional foods of this festival. It has two styles, the Cantonese style and the Suzhou-style, featuring various flavors ranging from meat, red bean to egg yolk. New varieties include chocolate and ice cream flavors.

Like many other festival food, the moon cake is associated with a legend.

In the ancient time, an archer named Houyi was awarded a pill of immortality after he shot down nine devil sunbirds and saved the Earth from being too hot. However, his wife Chang'e, who later became the Moon Goddess of Immortality, stole the pill and floated to the Moon.

Alone on the Moon, Chang'e felt regret and missed her husband. She visited Houyi in a dream and said: "If you use flour to make a moon-shaped cake in the evening of middle August and call my name three times loudly, I'll fly back to the Earth to reunite with you."

From then on, the cake became the symbol of family and unity.
