More C919 jets to be assembled for flying tests

THE second C919 narrow-body aircraft will roll off the assembly line this year for further test flying, officials announced today.

Six C919 jets, the nation's first domestically developed single-aisle passenger aircraft, will be assembled for the flying tests before its commercial operation, which is scheduled around 2020, said Fu Guohua, deputy chief designer for C919.

"It won't take long for the second C919 to fly to the sky," Fu said, adding engineers will change some designs according to the test flying.

The first C919 will mainly test the flying conditions, the onboard equipment and the landing gear, while the second or No.102 jet will be tested mainly on the engine and fuel systems, said Mao Wei, director with the test flying engineering department with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the developer of C919.

The No.102 jet will also receive test flying under tough weather conditions, Wu added. The following jets will further test the avionics systems.

The sixth jet will be quite close to the final version C919 for its first commercial flight, Wu said.

The following tests will be carried out in Yanliang in northwest Shaanxi Province to reduce the impacts on the busy traffic at the Pudong airport, said You Liyan, a senior engineer with the department.

Some 40 domestic and international flights were canceled and over 30 others were delayed at the Pudong airport to give way to the test flying around 2pm.

China's civil aviation regulator has issued a top-level red alert for mass flight delays that may hit the Pudong airport between 1pm and 3:30pm today.

The air traffic capability at the airport will decrease by 70 percent to "ensure an important flying task," the East China Regional Administration under the Civil Aviation Administration of China said.
