More bacteria in food
TAIWAN-BASED Hai Pa Wang's frozen fish-flavor dumpings were found to contain golden staph bacteria that can cause pneumonia and blood poisoning, Guangzhou's quality authorities said yesterday.
The Guangzhou Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said that out of 25 batches of frozen food they tested, the Hai Pa Wang product, a very popular food, was the only one containing the bacteria.
It marked the second time Hai Pa Wang products were found to have golden staph in two months. Last month, a type of frozen dumpling made by Hai Pa Wang on sale in Guangzhou was found to contain the same bacteria.
Golden staph in frozen food has aroused recent nationwide concern as several leading brands were exposed to have such problems. In October, a Henan Province-based company, Zhengzhou Synear Food Co Ltd, confirmed the presence of golden staph in its flash-frozen seafood and pork-stuffed dumplings.
Frozen dumplings made by Hong Kong-based Wanchai Ferry were found to contain golden staph last month, and some of its products have been pulled from shelves.
Manufacturers have complained that the bacteria won't cause harm as long as the food is properly heated. A new quality standard on frozen food says the bacteria can exist in minute quantities in the products. Experts said the new standard is not a sign that the ministry has gone soft on contamination but just uses newer data in its calculation.
The new standard will take effect on December 21.
