More cash for porn blitz

THE Chinese government is to offer greater cash rewards for people reporting lewd or pornographic content online after handing out 224,000 yuan (US$32,810) as of late last week.

Between December 4 and January 15, the National Anti-Pornography and Anti-Illegal Publications Office received more than 90,000 tip-offs about dubious Websites.

Some 215 people had been given a total of 224,000 yuan for reporting the sites, with rewards ranging from 1,000 yuan (US$146) to 10,000 yuan, according to the office.

Authorities are now to "offer even more money to those who report, to encourage people to proactively participate."

In 2009, authorities closed or blocked more than 15,000 pornographic Websites, including over 11,000 mobile WAP sites.

With an estimated 384 million Internet users, China has a bigger online population than any other country.

China has intensified its fight against online pornography.

On December 8, the country launched a new round of crackdown on spreading pornographic contents through Internet or mobile WAP sites to "purify the social environment." The campaign is expected to run to May.
