More gas from Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan will boost natural gas deliveries to China by two-thirds under an agreement signed in Beijing yesterday.
Annual gas deliveries will increase by 25 billion cubic meters a year, bringing the total to 65 billion cubic meters a year. That's equivalent to more than half of China's entire natural gas consumption last year.
The gas agreement was one of 14 signed following talks between Turkmen President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov and Chinese President Hu Jintao. Others cover loans for the purchase of oil and gas drilling equipment, police training, and counter terrorism.
Hu pledged to deepen energy cooperation with Turkmenistan and establish a strategic energy partnership following the success of the natural gas pipeline between the two countries which opened in 2009.
China and Turkmenistan launched a natural gas pipeline in central Asia in December 2009. The 1,833 kilometer pipe, starting from the border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and running through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan before reaching northwest China's Xinjiang region, had delivered 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China by the end of May this year.
Today, Berdymukhamedov will attend the ceremonial opening of a US$22 billion pipeline that will carry Turkmen gas to southern China. The 8,700km natural gas pipeline began operating in June, helping boost supplies to the country's booming industrial zones. It will provide up to 30 billion cubic meters a year.
Berdymukhamedov is in China for a four-day visit and will also travel to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
