More get leave to look after aging parents

PEOPLE born under China’s one-child policy are being given leave to care for elderly parents in an increasing number of places around the country.
According to chinanews.com, this can vary from 10 to 20 days a year.
The policy grants an only child leave when parents, who must be 60 or older, have to go to hospital. Wages and benefits for the carers are unaffected.
Central China’s Henan Province introduced the policy in May last year, followed by the provinces of Fujian and Hainan, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The policy is currently under consideration in the Sichuan and Hubei provinces, and in the municipality of Chongqing.
“Our generation faces aggravated pressure to provide for four parents after getting married,” said Liu Qianqian, who works in Beijing, “with intensive workloads on one hand and aging parents who need our help more and more on the other.”
However, she was concerned about implementation of the policy as she said even two-day weekends could not be guaranteed in some private enterprises at the moment.
China’s one-child policy, introduced at the end of the 1970s, was successful in reining in the growth of its population. In 2016, China allowed married couples to have two children, following an earlier relaxation allowing couples a second child if one parent was an only child.
